Meet Our Mechanic: Steve Merry

Meet Our Mechanic: Steve Merry

Steve started with Bitu-mill in August 2011, as a trade assistant in the workshop reporting and working alongside our Senior Mechanic, Christian Withers. Having transferred from a carpentry position, Steve was excited to try something different and take on new challenges.

Over the years he began to really enjoy working on and fixing some of Bitu-mil’s machines, including but not limited to Wirtgen Road Profilers, Vogel Pavers, Hamm Rollers, Mustang Bobcats and Hino Street Sweepers. In 2015 he decided it was time to express his interest in the possibility of furthering his skills in the field to a higher level.

In September the approval came through for Steve to be enrolled in a Diesel Mechanic apprenticeship. Steve said “I was ecstatic and I jumped at the idea knowing this was going to cement a solid alliance with Bitu-mill going forward.”

The apprenticeship through Kangan Institute, is designed to be completed over a period of 3 years. The official commencement date was 19.10.2015, shortly after starting the course Steve unfortunately broke his right wrist while training at the gym which put a sudden halt to his studies. After recovering from the injury Steve became highly driven to get straight back into the apprenticeship and complete the course. In just over 2 years, with a completion date of 16.11.2017 he became a fully qualified Diesel Mechanic — specialising in heavy plant.

Highights of my position as Diesel Mechanic

The opportunity to work with such an array of large machines and equipment.
Road Construction utilising specialised machinery, it’s a privilege to be one of few in Australia qualified to conduct mechanical works on this type of equipment. What I really enjoy most about this job, is the versatility of the role working on and off site, including the challenges of fabricating, servicing, repairs, breakdowns & operating, I’m always doing something different.

I would like to say a huge thankyou to Christian Withers, for always encouraging me to push myself to succeed. The knowledge and learning patterns I have developed working along side such a skilled Diesel Mechanic cannot be read in books or taught in school. If it wasn’t for him, I know I wouldn’t have been able to accomplish what I have in such a short time frame.

I cannot thank Bitu-mill enough for giving me this opportunity to further my career and supporting me through the completion of my studies. I can see a long future ahead working with Bitu-mill and it is exciting.
