Our Solar System

Our Solar System

The road maintenance and civil construction industries are not typically renowned for promoting a positive impact on environmental sustainability. It’s an unavoidable reality; the industry demands the use of diesel hungry machinery, is reliant on the use of non-sustainable resources and development can have the effect of adversely disrupting natural ecologies.

On the job site, Bitu-mill prides itself on taking whatever steps possible to minimise its impact on the environment, for example:
Maintaining and continually updating a modern, efficient fleet of machinery. Wherever possible, recycling milled asphalt product so it can be reused.

Likewise, in the office space Bitu-mill has taken the initiative to:

Update all 156 office lighting panels from relatively efficient T5 fluorescent tubes to ultra-efficient LED light panels.

Update all 48 incandescent high-bay lighting systems in the workshop to ultra-efficient LED downlights. This system is supported by a light sensing bypass switch, which turns off the power if there is enough natural light in the area.

And finally, Bitu-mill has just finished the installation of a 100kw solar power system. The system is comprised of 340 x 290w panels, 4 x 25kw SMA inverters and has the potential to produce an average of 340kw per day. This is above and beyond the average daily usage, which means the system should contribute power back on to the grid.

Micro Stabilisation

Micro Stabilisation

Bitu-mill would like to welcome the addition of a new business unit that we have started in July – Micro Stabilisation.

Micro Stabilisation is essentially a spot-fixer for individual patches of road using the existing materials mixed with innovative  binding products and recycling it to create a smooth, sustainable and above all, safe road surface.

Rather than closing road lanes and creating major disruption, Micro-stabilisation is designed around smaller plant (bobcats with mixing heads) and equipment that can undertake in-situ stabilised patches within a targeted environment and provide a quick set-up through to completion.

The new division will be headed up by Des Smith and ably assisted by Clinton Syme as the team Leader, Jeremy Harman and two ground staff.

The operation will be based out of Echuca and is focusing on works in Regional Victoria and Regional Southern NSW.  Des and his team have all come from Citywide where this Micro Stabilisation business has been operating successfully for several years and has been subcontracting to Rural Civil during that time.  We have also acquired Citywides fleet which included two trucks, two bobcats with grader and mixer attachments many attachments, a tractor, a roller and utes.

We have hit the ground running with projects already in hand and will start works in August in the Northern Region for VicRoads.

This new division will further enhance Bitu-mill Civil capabilities and we look forward to what Des and his team can bring to the business.

Friends of Africa Charity Golf Day

Friends of Africa Charity Golf Day

Bitu-mill has just completed its 9th Annual Charity Golf day and with the funds raised from this year’s event being directed to help build a solar power station at Nzara Hospital South Sudan.

Nzara Hospital was supported by Bitu-mill back in 2013 and is where the Ultrasound Machine that was donated is currently in use for diagnostics in the hospital ER and for out-patient. The Ultrasound is being used by the US Army Medical team where previously no diagnostic services where available. The US Army Doctors have trained a local nurse in the ongoing use of the Ultrasound.

Nzara hospital is about to embark on developing X-ray facilities, being provided by the US Army Medical Corps. To operate the X-ray facility Nzara need a solar power station that will cost $250,000. With $100,000 already allocated to the project Bitu-mill has committed to help raise the shortfall of $150,000 in funds over the coming years.

This is happening with the expert assistance and partnership of renowned hospital architects, Ian Laging and Helen Berthelsen (new Royal Children’s, Epworth) and Martin Dingemanse (www.modelelectrical.com.au) who has a personal and company track record of delivering innovative and sustainable development solutions including his projects in South Sudan.

This was the 9th annual event where we raised $50,288 in cash  To date we have raised in excess of $596,000 as well as a generous donation of a portable Ultra Sound Machine now in use in the clinics in East Africa.

Congratulations to the winning team from Fleet Plant Hire

The golf day remains an annual event through the commitment of our sponsors. Without them it is nothing.
