Bitu-mill was contracted by Lend Lease to construct Merchant Street, a section of Collins Street, Karlsruhe and Import Lane as part of the development of Victoria Harbour in Melbourne’s Docklands. The works included essential services Water, Sewer, Drainage, Gas, Electricity and Communications, Roads and footpaths, landscaping, lighting and street furniture for the new addition to the City’s business district.
The project created a few challenges as Merchant Street required large amounts of fill between two partially completed high rise developments. Due to the soft ground conditions traditional methods of filling using clay or quarry materials loaded up the ground causing uplift on the two adjacent structures. To alleviate this problem the subgrade was trimmed into steps and large high density polystyrene blocks were used as fill. These were wrapped in waterproof membrane and covered with a layer of light weight scoria that was compacted and built up to the underside of pavement.
